Choosing your first step

Which service should I contact?

Someone is in immediate danger: call 112; for an ambulance in Mumbai, call 108.

You need someone to talk to: start with Tele-MANAS or iCALL.

You need protection, a complaint or a referral: choose the service for your concern from the sections above.

You do not need the perfect words

Making the call, one step at a time

When calling for yourself

  1. Explain what is happening now and whether anyone is in danger.
  2. Share your city, area and location when emergency help is needed.
  3. Say what help you need: someone to talk to, protection, a referral or emergency assistance.
  4. Ask what happens next. For complaints, request a reference number where available.

Helping a family member or friend

  • Listen calmly and take their concerns seriously.
  • Offer to sit with them while they call, where safe and appropriate.
  • If there is immediate danger, contact emergency services and follow the responder’s instructions.
  • If a line does not connect, try another appropriate service or the nearest hospital emergency department for urgent care.
Are all calls toll-free?

Free counselling or support does not necessarily mean the telephone call is free. We label a number “toll-free” only where the official provider identifies it that way. Standard network charges may apply to other numbers.

Can I call from Thane or Navi Mumbai?

National services can be used from these areas. Mumbai Police and BMC entries are local services; for a local emergency outside Greater Mumbai, use 112 or the relevant local authority.

What if the service is closed or the number is unreachable?

Check the official link for current operating arrangements. For mental-health support, Tele-MANAS is available 24 hours daily. If there is an immediate threat to safety or a medical emergency, call 112 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
